As the sounds of rain gradually dissipated Kyle went over in his mind the events that had lead him to his current situation. He had thought back to when Anna first sprung her big surprise on him a few days earlier and his hesitance at the whole idea. Hindsight being 20/20 he should have listened to his gut feelings about the spur of the moment romantic getaway she had promised.
“Come on honey it will be great” Anna shouted with much enthusiasm. “Listen babe I don’t know. A vacation does sound great but this just seems too good to be true. I mean an all inclusive getaway at this price has got to have a catch somewhere.” Kyle exclaimed.
Anna patted him on the head as she playfully kissed his cheek.
“You mean to tell me that you aren’t the least bit excited to spend a romantic getaway on a tropical island with your loving fiancée. Imagine all the fun we could have; no telephones ringing in our ears, no one beating down the door every five seconds and most importantly I can wear that “special outfit” you bought me.” She retorted.
After mulling the idea over in his head for a few moments he finally caved in.
“Alright, but at least let me check it out before you run off all half cocked and spend our money on something that is probably some kind of scam. Okay?” He responded.
Anna looked him sheepishly in the eyes before dropping the bombshell.
“Well….in order to guarantee us a spot I had to pay for the whole deal up front.” She said with an uncertain look on her face.
Before Kyle could respond she continued “I heard about this place from a friend of mine that said her cousin went on the same trip last year and had so much fun she decided to quit her job and move there. Come on honey, we need this; I mean we REALLY need some quality “Alone Time”. You know what I’m saying.”
And in fact Kyle knew exactly what she was saying. With the telephone ringing every 10 minutes or friends and family stopping by unannounced their love life had dwindled from a roaring flame to a barely burning ember. Just the mere thought of rekindling that flame was enough for Kyle to throw caution to the wind and go along with the program.
Anna never really said too much about her family other than they had grown apart over the years. It was a sore subject that was very rarely if ever discussed. Kyles family on the other hand seemed to make it a point to either stop by 50 times a day or call at the most inopportune times; meaning just as they were about to get frisky the damned doorbell would go off or the phone would ring incessantly.
“You know a vacation sounds really good right about now”. Kyle exclaimed.
“I could take a few days off work, I’ve got several vacation days coming to me so I think we can make this happen. Now come over here and gimme some sugar.” He said with exuberance as he scooped Anna off the floor in a loving embrace.
The flight to the island went off without a hitch. It was an 8 hour flight so Kyle and Anna took this time to reacquaint themselves with each other. Basking in the glow of young love; exploring each others bodies as much as they could on a private flight without garnering any unwanted attention from the crusty old pilot or the gangly flight attendant.
Kyle suggested on numerous occasions joining the “Mile High Club” but Anna adamantly refused saying it just didn’t feel right or what if they got caught. Her hesitance only fueled his desire to bring his plan to fruition. But alas it never happened. Just as Anna seemed to begrudgingly give in and accept his offer the pilot came over the loud speaker.
“Fasten your seatbelts we are approaching the landing strip.” He bellowed through the P.A. system.
“Damn it.” Kyle muttered to himself as he fastened the belt snugly around his waist. “I was so close. Oh well there’ll be plenty of time to feed the need once we land. And I plan on gorging myself at every opportunity I can.”
Anna glanced over at her beloved as he grinned like a Cheshire cat. Kyle leaned in close to her and whispered “I can’t wait until we land this bucket of bolts and get to the hotel. My 747 is yearning to make an emergency landing on your airstrip.”
Kyles friskiness made Annas cheeks turn 5 different shades of red.
She took him by the hand and guided it between her legs momentarily as she cooed “All in good time my sweet. Good things come to those who wait.”
This reassurance from Anna was short lived though because upon landing the pilot informed the couple that in order to get to their island they would need to charter a boat and a captain or try to navigate through the water themselves. This new information put the kibosh on any immediate plans Kyle had of satiating his lustful hunger. With their bags in tow the lovebirds hailed a taxi then headed to the local docks. It seemed as though Kyles hesitance to come on this trip was merited. All they had run into since arriving was one problem after another. First the delay of getting to the island then the fact that there was no one available to charter a boat to the island itself had Kyle second guessing this whole trip.
Anna sensing that Kyle was on his last legs in regards to their “Romantic” getaway pulled him in close and planted a passionate kiss on his lips.
As the two stood outside the boatyard Anna had a flash of brilliance.
“Why don’t we just rent one of these smaller boats and drive ourselves to the island. You can read a map right? She quizzed.
Kyle seeming slightly annoyed replied “Of course I can read a map. I was on the Yacht Team back in college for Christs sake. I told you that when we first met.”
Anna looked Kyle in the face obviously dejected by his comments before snatching up her bags and heading down the sidewalk.
“I’m sorry baby”. Kyle said. “This trip has just got me a little flustered. I didn’t mean to snap at you. You’re my world and I would never do anything to hurt you. Yeah, that’s a good idea. We don’t need some gap toothed sailor when we have Super Kyle…Able to steer a boat through a raging thunder storm, more powerful than a class 3 hurricane, able to steer through gale force winds without even breaking a sweat…..”
This made Anna chuckle to herself. “You’re crazy, Super Kyle, anyway how can I stay mad at a face like that?”
With their plans back on track Kyle and Anna headed to their destination, the lush tropical getaway that they so richly deserved. Little did they know what horrors awaited them starting with the unfortunate gust of wind that ripped the map from Annas hands stranding them in the middle of the warm tropical waters.
As they desperately tried to find their bearings Kyle reached for the short wave radio to summon help.
“Hello, my name is Kyle. My fiancée and I are lost somewhere off the coast of the main island. If anyone can hear me please respond; we are in dire need of assistance. Over” he cried out.
But there was no answer and upon further inspection it seemed as though the power supply to the radio had been gnawed in two, more than likely by a rodent of some sort. Rats and boats go hand in hand after all.
With no land masses in sight Kyle and Anna decided to put up the sail to conserve the little gasoline they had on board and hope that the gusts of wind led them to an island or at the very least to someone that could lead them to safety.
Anna, now scared and shaking rested her head on Kyles chest; he clutched her in his loving arms as he comforted his bride to be.
“Don’t worry honey; we’ll make it through this. Someone is bound to come along and rescue us. I just know it.” He reassured her.
Anna on the other hand was not so certain. She knew deep within her heart that bad things were on the horizon. Kyle could sense her apprehension so he drew her in closer and planted a kiss on her forehead.
As the two lovebirds slowly drifted around for hours with Anna manning the wheel while Kyle took a much needed rest, they trudged onward. Before too long Anna began jumping up and down with joy and screaming at the top of her lungs.
“Kyle I see land, we’re saved.”
After making a beeline toward the tiny island Kyle and Anna tied the ship to a large rock and headed off in an attempt to locate someone that could be of assistance to the weary travelers. Kyles recollection of what happened next was foggy at best. He remembers holding Annas hand tightly in his as the two navigated through the overgrown jungle that surrounded them.
The air was filled with all kinds of different animal sounds. Most were the usual bird calls and insects chirping but in the distance Kyle heard something that made him stop dead in his tracks. A loud roar echoed through the dense jungle area; a sound Kyle had never heard before. He knew it wasn’t a lion or a tiger and bears were completely out of the question because of their tropical locale. So what was it?
To Kyle it didn’t really matter what it was he was bound and determined to protect his darling Anna and safely guide them back to civilization. Even if it meant putting himself in harms way. While the two trekked further and further into the dense jungle landscape Kyle couldn’t help but get the overwhelming feeling that someone or something was watching them.
His eyes darted feverishly from left to right as they pushed on, scanning the area for anything that seemed out of the ordinary or at the very least someone other than themselves.
The memories of what had happened next made Kyle break down completely. A stream of tears flooded down his face as thoughts of his final moments with his beloved Anna came rushing back like a tidal wave.
After walking through the jungle for what seemed like an eternity listening intently to the loud bird calls, snorts and chirping of the animals that inhabited the island itself the mystery of the loud roar Kyle had heard earlier would be revealed.
It all happened in an instant, Kyle recalls seeing something that looked almost human spring from the bushes. A gigantic beast with overdeveloped arms and legs swooped in and grabbed Anna. The beast clutched Anna tightly in his arms as he raised her high above his misshapen head and let out a guttural war cry in Kyles direction. The beast stood directly in front of Kyle, challenging the man to do something, but he was frozen with fear, unable to come to the rescue of his damsel in distress.
The hulking beast that stood before him was easily 7 feet tall, maybe larger. His bulging eyes stared coldly at Kyle as saliva dripped from his large fanged mouth. The beast wore a tattered loin cloth to cover his private area; his bare upper torso was a good 3, maybe 4 feet wide. Clumps of long, black, matted hair dangled in the beasts face. As the beast let out another loud roar Kyle felt himself slipping into a dark oblivion. His head began to feel woozy and his knees buckled, sending him crashing down onto the unforgiving jungle floor.
When he came to he was in a cave, or maybe a basement, at this point he wasn’t too sure. All he knew was his loving Anna was no longer by his side and he was now chained up, alone in the dark.
“I hope my baby is alright. She is my life, my reason for living; I don’t think I could go on without her.” He thought to himself.
The rain that had beaten down hard earlier had now eased into a gentle downpour. His thoughts were not only of getting out of this ordeal alive but reuniting with his dear sweet Anna. Suddenly he heard voices, followed by a dim light that seemed to get brighter and brighter as it neared him.
He could make out at least 3 dark figures inching their way closer to him.
He angrily shouted out “Let me go you mother fuckers. If you have harmed so much as a hair on my angels head I will gut you like a fucking fish. DO YOU HEAR ME?”
As the dark figures closed in on Kyle he heard a voice; A familiar voice, Annas.
“Now, now let’s not be too hasty there Kyle. I’m perfectly fine. As a matter of fact I can take care of myself. I don’t need some knight in shining armor to come rescue me from the tower.” She boasted.
Before Kyle could utter a single word another voice rang out.
“Yes, my little girl has done a fine job. It may have taken a little longer than I envisioned, and we will work on that next time right?” the man said as he looked at Anna.
She shook her head in agreement but her moment in the sun was overshadowed by yet another voice.
“You know it never took me this long to hook someone. Little girl you need a lot of work if you’re gonna be half as good as I am.” The angry females voice echoed.
Kyles mind was swimming with several different thoughts by now. Who was this woman he knew as Anna? Why had she brought him to this island? And more importantly did he just imagine the encounter with that horrendously disfigured beast? After all they had been out in the open as the scorching sun relentlessly beat down upon them. Maybe he was confused from all that he had just been through and his mind was playing tricks on him. But all his questions would soon be answered as the man holding the light stepped in closer.
Kyles heart sank as he immediately recognized his face. It was the pilot of the airplane. Kyle was now angrier than before he hocked up a big loogie and launched it at the mans face as he screamed out.
“You sorry mother fucker, what the hell is going on here? Tell me now. I deserve to know.”
The man wiped the spit from his brow and explained “You see, I’m not as young as I used to be. There was a time when I provided all that my family needed. As a boat captain I had full access to fresh meat on any given day. Sadly, with all the changes that have come through this area fishing isn’t quite what it used to be. Hell, even the tourism has dropped tremendously. So I had to improvise. My daughters here will soon take over for me. My time on this earth is limited. I know that.”
Kyle began to get irate at the facts that were presented to him. It’s not exactly what he wanted to hear. But then again this whole trip wasn’t exactly what he planned for either. The predicament he found himself in at this very moment paled in comparison to what would eventually become of dear old Kyle. No, this family had one more surprise in store.
As Anna leaned in close to Kyle she whispered “I really did like you. But family comes first; always.”
And with that she motioned toward her sister who cried out “Jim-Jim dinnertime.”
From in the distance Kyle could see the lumbering beast that had met him in the jungle steadfastly heading toward him with evil intent on its mind. Annas sister had now flipped on the light switch and as soon as his eyes adjusted he got a good look at his captors. Annas sister, the woman he met on the plane as stewardess stood by her side, hand in hand. Their father, a grizzled old man, obviously on his last legs stared at his daughters proudly as the beast slowly lumbered in closer to Kyle.
As the beast inched its way in closer Anna looked at her father and in a somber voice spoke.
“I did good, right daddy?”
The man looked his daughter in the eyes and like any good father gave her some sage advice.
“Yes, my child you did well, but….you still need some work. Your sister can control Jim-Jim now for the most part but when he has to wait this long for his meals he gets a little testy. You’re lucky he didn’t take a chunk of your ass when he had the chance out in the jungle.”
Anna stared at the floor in shame. She had disappointed her father, not only that but made her poor brother suffer unnecessarily while she was out gallivanting with Kyle. She had made a mistake but it would never happen again, she had learned her lesson.
The dysfunctional family watched on as Jim-Jim stood mightily in front of their captive, breathing his foul breath directly in Kyles face. Kyle bent down on one knee and in his last act of defiance taunted the beast.
“Go ahead, do your worst. Your sister has already caused me more pain than you will ever know. Whatever you do to me know will seem like a tiny pin prick on my finger.”
And with that Jim-Jim took his powerful hands and gripped Kyle by the arm then with one forceful jerk ripped his arm right out of the socket and took a large bite out of it.
The beast savagely gnawed on the arm while Kyle let out an ear piercing scream of excruciating agony. Not from the physical pain, it was more because his heart had been shattered by a woman that supposedly loved him. And soon it would indeed be in a thousand pieces, only this time it would be digesting in Jim-Jims full stomach.
